B2 – FOCUS ON GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY

SO, SUCH, TOO and ENOUGH

SO, SUCH, TOO and ENOUGH often appear in rephrasing exercises, since they can be used to express similar ideas. However, it is important to remember that they are used with different complement clauses:

SO and SUCH are used with a “that clause”

Eg. It was so hot that I could hardly breathe / It was such a hot day that I could hardly breathe.

In contrast, TOO and ENOUGH are used with an infinitive complement. Take care to used the preposition “for” and a noun or object pronoun where necessary.

Eg. The weather is too hot for us to play tennis today (correct)

I am too old for me to work in Bershka (incorrect, since “for me” is superfluous)

Now complete the following rephrasings, taking care to use the correct complement clause.
